The Power of the Political TV Ad Event 9/20/2012

David Schwartz, a curator at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York, and the country's leading authority on Televised Political campaign commercials will be in Portland next Thursday, September 20 at 12:00 noon. He will give the history of the TV ad in Presidential elections from the 1950s right on through the Super Pac-fueled environment of the 2012 election. David will share examples from his museum's historic collection as well as insights on how they worked - or didn't. IF THE HIGH HEELS FIT ...

I had a really nice time last night. I went to a party at McCabe, Duval + Associates — they’re on the top floor of a building in the Old Port with amazing views of the waterfront. The theme was a summer picnic, French bistro style. I decided to dress in my version of casual French. I put on black capri pants and a long sleeved fitted dark purple t-shirt and slipped into a pair of black flats. My twenty something daughter is living with us for the time being and I’ve gotten into the habit of running outfits by her before leaving the house. Each time I realize that I am risking humiliation, but she has given me invaluable advice and claims to have saved me many times from public humiliation on a much grander scale.

Architectural Hooked Rugs at Maine Fiberarts

The elegant hooked work of nationally-renown artist Roslyn Logsdon is on view at Maine Fiberarts' gallery at 13 Main Street in Topsham through September 29. The exhibition will be crowned by two receptions—Sunday, August 5, from 2-5 p.m. (with a gallery talk scheduled from 2:30-3 p.m.) and on Thursday, August 9, from 5-7 p.m. (during which the artist will be on hand to answer questions). The second reception is sponsored by Halcyon Yarn of Bath, who will provide refreshments. Both receptions are free and open to the public.

"Architectural Elements: Hooked Rugs" consists of 33 different pieces, all with an architectural theme. Many of the rugs are scenes from the artist's travels in Italy, France, and the U.S. and include arches, facades, cafes, rooftops and window reflections.
