Jazz All State At Scarborough High School

Eighty one high school jazz musicians from all over Maine have descended on Scarborough High School for the 2012 Jazz All State Music Fesitval.  Sponsored by Maine Music Educators Association, participation is based on a rigorous auditions process which took place in October.  Students were chosen to perform in one of four ensembles:

Jazz Combo - 6 students, Jazz Band - 19 students, Honors Jazz Band 20 - students, and Honors Jazz Choir - 32 singers plus 4 students in the rhythm section.

Students will rehearse with guest conductors Thursday evening, all day Friday, Saturday morning and culminate in a concert Saturday afternoon.  The concert

will be held this Saturday, January 7th,  at Winslow Homer Auditiorium, Scarborough High School at 2:00 pm.  Admission is $5.00 at the door and the public is welcome.

Downeast Energy Announces Recipients of Its Scholarship Program

Downeast Energy will award scholarships to 14  high school seniors and graduates who are already enrolled full-time at approved postsecondary community colleges in the career and technical programs for  heating or building trades.  Each scholarship is for $500 per academic year.

The recipients of this year’s scholarships are (in alphabetical order):

1. Sara Adams, from Lisbon who is attending  University of Maine Farmington;

2. Philip Andresen, from Rockland who is  attending University of Maine at Orono;

3. Mitchell David Craig, Thornton Academy, Saco and is attending University of Southern Maine;

4. Mark Davis, from Mt Ararat, is attending Universal Technical Institute;

5. Courtney Gilman, from Maranacook and is attending Wheaton;

6. Jenna Kiely from Freeport, is attending University of Maine at Orono;

Hot Shot Competition - Freeport

The Maine Recreation & Park Association Hotshot Competition is a basketball skills event for youth ages 9 - 18. It involves shooting from 5 hot spots on the court. This competition tests each contestant's speed, shooting, dribbling, and rebounding ability. Each participant begins by competing in a local Hotshot event. All category winners of local events advance to the regional host site competitions. After the completion of the regional events, the winners and runners up of each category then advance to the M.R.P.A. State Hotshot Competition at the Portland Expo, home of the Maine Red Claws. Come see if you have what it takes to be a Hotshot Champion on Wednesday, December 28th at Freeport Public Schools, 17 West Street, Freeport.

This will not be the church craft fair that you went to last year...trying to decide between the wooden geese, doilies and the rayon yarn vests in red and green.

This will be the juried creatives fair of Rockland, where artists, artisans, craftspeople, and foodies can sell their wares to folks who are looking for the perfect gift for friends, family and coworkers.  Maybe for themselves, too! 

We will be located in the gym of the Lincoln Street Center, 24 Lincoln Street, with over 50 booths!

Race time is 8 a.m., so there is plenty of time to prepare your feast after the race.  You can even win a pie to bring home for dessert.
