Pratt's Brook Park - A Gem in Yarmouth

Pratt's Brook Park - A Gem in Yarmouth

Last week, my team of canine hikers scouted out yet another fantastic locale for woods walking, stream swimming and generalized off-leash adventure!  They give “two paws way UP” to Pratt’s Brook Park in Yarmouth!

Located off North Road as you head away from Route One towards Cumberland, this 220-acre tract of preserved land offers over seven miles of walking trails.  The routes are well-marked and there are trail maps and a kiosk with information at the trail head.  The parking area is located well off the main road and has plenty of parking for up to 30 cars.  On the Friday afternoon that we enjoyed the park, we were the only car in the lot.

CUMBERLAND: Patriot Flag Display

CUMBERLAND: Patriot Flag Display

On Thursday, June 23rd, from 7 a.m. to noon, the Town of Cumberland will be displaying a 30 ft. by 60 ft. flag on our ladder truck at Moss Side Cemetary at the Veterans Monument.  This flag is part of a nationwide tour that will be displayed in all 50 states and will conclude in New York City at ground zero on September 11th.  The intent of this display in each state is to remind all of our citizens to "Never Forget" the tragic events that happened to our country ten years ago.

There will be public safety staff, veterans, and anyone else that had a part of the terrorist attacks (both directly or indirectly) present.  The Patriot Flag tour has been featured on the CBS evening news and has grown in public awareness since the tour initiated last September.

Gritty McDuff's announces launch of Gritty's growlers in its three Maine brew pubs

Gritty McDuff's announces launch of Gritty's growlers in its three Maine brew pubs

Portland, ME - Gritty McDuff’s announced today that it is selling Gritty’s Growlers, refillable containers of draft beer available for carryout, at its three brew pubs in Portland, Auburn and Freeport.

“We’re thrilled to be selling Gritty’s Growlers,” said co-owner and master brewer Ed Stebbins.  “We’ve been getting requests for some time from customers about having fresh-from-the-tap beer available to them at home; and now we can offer it to them.”

Growlers are a longstanding brewing tradition. In the late 1800's and early 1900's, fresh beer was carried home from the local pub in a small galvanized pail. Rumor has it that when the beer sloshed around the pail, it created a rumbling sound as the CO2 escaped through the lid, thus the term "growler" was coined.  Today, the pail has been replaced with a 64 ounce glass jug. The glass jugs are more convenient than pails and environmentally friendly.
