LL Bean boot demand outweighs supply | News
FREEPORT, Maine (NEWS CENTER) – Maine's most famous retailer is one again having a tough time keeping up the demand for its signature product.
Last year more than 100,000 bean boots were back ordered with the Freeport company when its supply couldn't keep up with demand. That backlog has been cut down but some styles and sizes of the boot are out of stock as we head into another holiday season.
Long popular with outdoors people, something unexplained happened a few years ago. They became a fashion trend among high school and college students. Before long the demand outstripped the company's supply.
"They're hand made in Maine as they have been for 103-years, with great care, one pair at a time. I think they appreciate the rich history and back story of the boot. It's the iconic boot that started the company", said Mac McKeever, LL Bean Spokesperson.
Despite the struggle to keep up with demand, sales of the boot shot up to 450,000 pairs last year, an increase of more than 12-percent. This year the company expects to reach the half million mark.
