50th Anniversary of Silent Spring

2012 marks the 50th anniversary of Silent Spring, the landmark book that helped launch the modern environmental movement. To commemorate the anniversary, Maine Audubon will show a short biographical film in remembrance of the book’s author, scientist, and ecologist, Rachel Carson. The film will be followed by a panel of experts who will discuss and share perspectives on continuing threats to wildlife and humans from toxic chemicals in our environment.

“Rachel Carson helped spark a movement that Maine Audubon and many other organizations and conservationists carry on today,” said Maine Audubon Executive Director, Ted Koffman.

Chicken Hatch Part 5 - They're HERE!

The chicks are here!  They arrived one day early!  All four hatched out with the most beautiful of hues and markings.  They are Auracana's so they don't look anything like their surrogate mom.  It is such a blessing to watch this miracle of life unfolding right before our eyes!  Broody accepted them right away and is doing a nice job mothering them and taking care of them!  Enjoy the video!  It's priceless!

Hawkwatching season is here!  Freeport Wild Bird Supply (FWBS) will once again be partnering with Nikon Sport Optics to sponsor the Spring Hawkwatch at Bradbury Mountain State Park in Pownal, beginning on March 15th.  2012 marks the sixth consecutive season for this project through which valuable data is collected while providing an enjoyable and educational experience for visitors.

This year, we welcome Katrina Fenton as our official counter.  A native New Englander, Katrina is an experienced hawkwatcher, having spent many hours over three years with the Pack Monadnock Raptor Observatory in New Hampshire.  She is also an enthusiastic birder who leads walks at various natural areas in New England.  She’ll be stationed at the summit from 9:00am to 5:00 pm daily from March 15th to May 15th.

Sagadahoc County Recognizes Birth Defects Prevention Month and Folic Acid Awareness Week

January is National Birth Defects Prevention Month.

Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention states that, “Major birth defects are conditions that cause structural changes in one or more parts of the body; are present at birth; and have a serious, adverse effect on heath, development, or functional ability.“ Approximately one in every 33 babies is born with a birth defect.

This year, National Birth Defects Prevention Month focuses on one of the most common types of birth defects, congenital heart defects. Each year, nearly 40,000 infants in the United States are born with heart defects, which are the leading cause of death during the first year of life. As medical care and treatment have improved, those with congenital hearth defects are living longer lives.

January 8-14 is National Folic Acid Awareness Week.

Not all birth defects can be prevented.
