Hawkes Firewood back with new biomass fired kilns | Business
<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Phippsburg, Maine – Hawkes Firewood, a leader in the firewood market for over 25 years is again providing high quality kiln dried firewood to the Mid Coast region.
Mark Hawkes and John Taylor of Brunswick have rejuvenated the business by building a new wood chip burning gasification boiler to heat the firewood kilns. This new computer controlled system is clean and green and represents the best stewardship of the forest industry.
“We used to burn used motor oil to heat the kilns but now we use no fossil fuel at all. The wood chips are a by-product of logging the trees so we utilize this natural resource to its maximum potential,” Hawkes noted. The kiln dried wood burns cleaner and provides more heat than air dried wood because the moisture content is lower. Very little heat from the fire is used to drive the water out of the wood. Taylor said, “Kiln dried firewood provides a predictable hot fire that burns well in the efficient wood stoves and fireplaces on the market today.” Kiln dried wood represents a very good value for the home heating dollar.
Nights are getting cold and the heating season upon us again.
