Fourth Annual Merriconeag Poetry Festival Calls for Submissions
Fourth Annual Merriconeag Poetry Festival Calls for Submissions

We are pleased to announce the beginning of the contest segment of the Fourth Annual Merriconeag Poetry Festival. The Festival is open to any Maine student attending a public or private high school in Cumberland, Androscoggin and Sagadahoc counties.  Students may submit one poem—no longer than one side of a typed page—on any subject by the deadline, March 1, 2011.  Nationally-known, Maine poet Wes McNair will select twenty finalists, who will be honored at a reading and awards ceremony on May 1 from 3-5 p.m., at Merriconeag Waldorf School, in Freeport. Awards will include gift certificates and publication in a Festival anthology.
The past three years’ Festivals arose out of the conviction that the untapped voices of student- poets in Maine deserve to be recognized.  In past years, student-poets from a wide range of area schools—including Freeport, Windham Christian, Greely, Yarmouth, South Portland, Roosevelt, Grace Baptist, Livermore Falls, Catherine McAuley, Merriconeag, and Scarborough—have been honored for their poetry.  Interest in last year’s Festival doubled from the year before.
Hard-copy submissions should be sent to:

Poetry Festival
Merriconeag Waldorf High School
83 Pineland Dr.
New Gloucester, ME   04260

Submissions can also be emailed to highschool@merriconeag.org.  The word Poetry should appear in the subject line.  Since this is a “blind judging,” poems should come as attachments, in a Word format only, with only the title to identify the piece.  All other information—name, poem title, school, grade, teacher, home address and phone number—should appear in the body of the email.  If you have any questions, please contact David Sloan at 688-8989, ext. 204, or at the email address above.
