The Beadin' Path of Freeport, ME named 2010 Merchant of the Year

The board of directors of the Maine Merchants Association recently chose The Beadin’ Path of Freeport, ME, as its 2010 Merchant of the Year.  The award will be presented at the Maine Merchants Association 77th annual meeting on October 27th at the Augusta Civic Center in Augusta, ME.

Although a number of qualified merchants were considered, The Beadin’ Path was chosen because of its commitment to Maine as a local, women-owned business; its leadership in using cutting edge social media to expand their marketability beyond the Maine border and for their tireless commitment  in supporting the community.

The Merchant of the Year Award has three main criteria: continued growth in employees or sales; commitment of company resources to community projects; and creation of a positive work environment for all employees.  The Beadin’ Path exceeded the criteria on all counts.

The Beadin’ Path operates a brick and mortar retail location in Freeport, ME and is able to cater to a niche market of creative individuals through outstanding customer service, a unique product mix and savvy business skills. For the last seventeen years, Jan Parker and Heather DeSimone are a mother-daughter dynamic duo that serves as role models for other small Maine-based businesses.

The Beadin’ Path, founded in 1993, accomplishes their mission by providing friendly and courteous service, quality merchandise but also taking full advantage of social media.  Through mediums like Twitter, Facebook and Etsy, The Beadin’ Path is able to take their 2,400 sq. foot store and open the doors to customers across the country. From vintage beads to more contemporary styles, their product mix is constantly changing and remaining relevant to their customer base. The Beadin’ Path sets the tone for all employers with their dedication to community service and to their employees.  Whether serving on volunteer boards like Purses with a Purpose, fulfilling a long-standing commitment to the Freeport community or tirelessly promoting their industry and expertise through social media, The Beadin’ Path is a leader in Maine’s merchant community.

“The Beadin’ Path is an excellent role model for other companies in Maine.  From the first time I met Jan and Heather, I was impressed with their business skills, leadership and hard work to make their business successful. A successful business is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration. The Beadin’ Path is an outstanding choice for the 2010 Merchant of the Year,” stated Curtis Picard, Executive Director of the Maine Merchants Association.

Heather DeSimone, one of The Beadin’ Path owners, remarked, “The Beadin’ Path is very excited about being selected as the 2010 Maine Merchant of the Year.  Our employees work very hard to make the company a success and having the company recognized for its solid commitment to customers, to the community, and its employees is important, especially during challenging times. The Beadin’ Path also gratefully recognizes and thanks its customers, for without them, winning awards like this wouldn’t be possible.”

The Maine Merchants Association has presented the annual Merchant of the Year Award since 1980.  Other winners include Acadia Corporation (2009), Johnny’s Selected Seeds (2008), Stonewall Kitchen (2007), Hammond Lumber Company (2006), and Indian Hill Trading Post (2005).  The award will be presented on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at the Maine Merchants Association Annual Meeting at the Augusta Civic Center in Augusta, ME.
