84th Annual Pageant of the Nativity
Events, Families

Please join us for the 84th annual Pageant of the Nativity on Sunday, December 12 at 4:45pm in the meetinghouse. This special worship service was written by the Rev. Vincent Silliman, minister of First Parish from 1926-1938 and later minister of the First Universalist Church of Yarmouth. Some of the costume fabrics were brought from Palestine by the nieces of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The Pageant is inspired by the paintings of 15th century artist Fra Angelico and through music and narration builds into a majestic candlelit tableau creating a living illustration representing the Spirit of Goodwill in each of us. Non-denominational in nature, the Pageant makes no religious statement. Rather, it is meant simply to honor the birth of one of history’s great prophets.
This annual tradition connects us through time to those First Parish members who participated before us and we carry their memory forward. Some participants this year have grown up through Pageant roles beginning with Heavenly Hosts. Some entire families are participating. As a worship service, rather than a performance, cast members are not listed by name. It takes more than 100 people to produce this meaningful event, both in the cast and behind the scenes. There is a place in the Pageant for everyone from First Parish who wishes to participate in some way. Please contact Laurie Hasty (797-5661 or laurie@maine.rr.com) if you are interested in being involved.
It is our hope that First Parish’s Pageant of the Nativity will be a meaningful part of your family’s holiday celebration - in the congregation, behind the scenes, or in the tableau.
