Maine Preparing for Spectacular 2014 Fall Foliage Season

 

With the start of the Maine Fall Foliage season soon to begin, The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) reports that conditions in the northernmost part of the state are prime for subtle color changes with very low leaf drop.  Beginning Wednesday, September 10, the Maine Office of Tourism and DACF will provide an update on the gradual change in leaf color from north to south culminating in peak conditions in late-October.

Falmouth man charged with possessing child pornography

ALMOUTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Maine State Police have charged a Portland attorney with possessing child pornography.

63-year-old Lawrence Winger was arrested by the Computer Crimes Unit at his home on Bay Shore Drive in Falmouth. He is charged with possessing sexually explicit material of someone under the age of 12. Police got a tip on Winger and his computer was seized earlier this month. An initial review of his computer found dozens of images and videos of child porn.

There are no known Maine victims. Winger has a law office in Portland.

Winger was taken to the Cumberland County Jail and released on $500 bail.

The State of Maine’s sixth annual Open Lighthouse Day will take place on Saturday, September 13 with lighthouses open throughout the state and free entry available to visitors on this one day.  The popular event, sponsored by the United States Coast Guard, the Maine Office of Tourism and the American Lighthouse Foundation, draws between 15,000 to 18,000 visitors annually with the unique opportunity to climb and learn about Maine’s historic lights.

“As one of our largest industries, tourism provides an outstanding way for Maine to attract visitors, create jobs and provide new investment opportunities,” said Governor Paul R. LePage.  “My administration is committed to supporting events and activities that showcase our state as a terrific place to visit, study, and invest.”

Veggies for All: Fresh produce for local food pantry

On the third Saturday of every month, from 6:00 to 8:00 am cars line up at the drive-through window of the Volunteer Regional Food Pantry in Unity, Maine.

In that hour and a half, the pantry is able to provide food to about 275 families or nearly 700 people throughout its community. Each family that drives up to the window gets a box full of non perishable food items topped with freshly harvested vegetables. Read more ...
